The tradition of carved Hai-Matau hooks spans over a thousand years. Hai-Matau hooks were considered sacred objects empowered with the spirit of those who had worn them. The carvings, passed down through generations of warriors and tribal leaders were respected as treasured artifacts. To receive the gift of a carved Hai-Matau hook was an honor.
These very unique fishhooks represent strength, prosperity, abundance, fertility and respect for the sea. The hooks are believed to bring good luck as well as protect those wearing them as they travel on the sea.
The carving are based on artifacts of the Maori tribe of New Zealand and are inspired by the original tribal designs. Each hook is hand carved in the tradition of the Hai-Matau and comes with the blessing of the artisan.
